Properties of Gypsum Board

Gypsum Is Fire-Resistant: Gypsum boards are fire resistant and safeguard the structure from fire threats by preventing the fire from spreading further. Due to chemically bound water in the gypsum, it possesses a fire-resistant quality. When gypsum boards are exposed to fire, the water contained within the gypsum evaporates, forming a protective layer.

Thermal Properties of Gypsum: Gypsum can regulate variables such as humidity and temperature in the home. The insulating characteristics of gypsum plasterboard or formwork used in buildings are improved.

Acoustic Property of Gypsum: Sound isolation is prioritized in the design of gypsum materials. Other methods, such as masonry, would work well, as it is commonly used in a thicker thickness and is no less demanding than gypsum. Gypsum plasterboard is designed to absorb sound and reduce reverberation.. Adding an air space between two solid gypsum walls improves acoustic performance by preventing noise from passing through. For example, instead of a 110mm thick brick wall, we can use 75mm thick drywall to obtain the same sound performance.

Non-combustible Property of Gypsum: The heating of gypsum products causes the water crystals in the gypsum material to heat up. Calcinations is the process of dehydrating gypsum with heat. Calcinations creates a protective layer over the components, preventing them from combusting and allowing the materials around them to retain a lower, safer temperature.
The residue will act as an insulating layer until it is separated, even after the water crystals have been entirely calcined. Because of its non-combustible quality and capacity to slow fire development for hours depending on the extent to which gypsum products are utilized, gypsum is regarded as an effective fire retarder.

Advantages of Gypsum Board

Gypsum is also used in plaster to provide a smooth, crack-free surface. Gypsum boards give a smooth, continuous surface to which you can apply paint directly.

Gypsum has the property of balancing the building’s indoor temperature and humidity. Gypsum is a low-emission building material that provides excellent thermal and acoustic insulation.

The use of gypsum goods within the budget boosts the creativity of architects. It offers a wide range of attractive design options.

The gypsum products are simple to install and do not necessitate the use of trained staff. The installation is simple, clean, and quick.

The gypsum plaster does not need to be painted, and it can be utilized as a final finish. It provides the surface of the wall with a lovely white sheen.

A wide range of gypsum products is available to meet a variety of practical and aesthetic needs.

Waterproof Fireproof Mositure Resistance Gypsum Board

Types of Drywall

Regular Gypsum Boards

Regular gypsum boards, also known as drywall, are the most commonly used type. They are composed of a gypsum core encased in a thick paper on both sides. These boards are lightweight, easy to install, and offer excellent sound insulation properties. Regular gypsum boards are widely used for creating interior walls and ceilings in residential and commercial buildings.

Fire &/or Moisture Resistant Boards

Fire and moisture resistant gypsum boards are engineered to provide enhanced protection against both fire and moisture. They contain additives that improve their resistance to moisture and fire, making them suitable for areas that require additional safety measures, as required by the building requirements.

Acoustic Boards

Acoustic gypsum boards are specifically designed to absorb sound, making them ideal for creating soundproof spaces. They feature a dense core and additional sound-damping layers, which reduce noise transmission and improve the acoustic performance of a room. Acoustic boards are commonly used in theaters, recording studios, conference rooms, and home theaters.

Impact Resistant Boards

Impact-resistant gypsum boards are engineered to withstand physical impact and abuse. They have a reinforced core that enhances their durability, making them highly suitable for high-traffic areas prone to damage, such as hallways, schools, hospitals, and public buildings. These boards help maintain the structural integrity of the walls and reduce maintenance costs.

Shaft Boards

Shaft Board has a pure, high-density gypsum core with special additives for superior moisture and fire resistance. It is the ideal product for fire-resistance requirements in areas such as lifts, stairwells, service shafts and other fire-resistant applications.

Glass Mat Sheathing Boards

Glass mat sheathing boards are gypsum boards reinforced with fiberglass mats on both sides. These boards offer excellent resistance to moisture, mold, and impact. They are commonly used as exterior sheathing in buildings to provide a protective layer and improve the overall structural integrity.

Application of Gypsum Board

Interior Walls

Commonly used to build partition walls and interior room walls due to its lightweight and ease of installation.

01

Ceilings

Ideal for creating smooth ceilings that can be painted or finished with decorative textures.

02

Soundproofing

Gypsum board with soundproofing properties is used in areas requiring noise reduction, such as home theaters or bedrooms.

03

Moisture-Resistant Areas

Special moisture-resistant gypsum boards are used in bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms to prevent mold and water damage.

04

Fire-Resistant Construction

Fire-rated gypsum boards are used in areas where fire resistance is required, like stairwells or between shared walls in multi-family housing.

Drywall Installation Tools

Chalk line: A tool used for making accurate, straight lines for cutting drywall panels.

Drywall hammer: A special hammer with a wide, beveled head used in the installation of drywall. Also known as a hatchet.

Keyhole saw: A narrow, pointed hand saw used especially for cutting openings in gypsum board for electrical outlets, pipes and ducts. Sometimes called a “drywall saw.”

PPE (Personal Protective Equipment): Safety gear worn to provide protection during drywall installation, which can include a dust mask, gloves, ear plugs and safety glasses.

Rasp: A coarse file to smooth ragged drywall edge cuts.

Screw gun: A power tool used to drive drywall screws through drywall panels into framing with the ability to set the depth of penetration.

T-square: A tool used as a guide to help cut drywall to size. Extended to 48 inches, it’s long enough to aid in making an even, straight cut across the entire width of a sheet of drywall.

Utility knife: A knife with a small sharp blade, often retractable, used for cutting drywall.

Utility Saw: A short handsaw with very coarse teeth for cutting drywall for door and window frame openings.

Drywall Sizes

Drywall is available in four common thicknesses: 1/4”, 3/8”, 1/2” and 5/8”. As discussed above, shaft liner comes in 1” thick panels. The most commonly used thickness is 1/2”, which forms the walls and ceilings of the majority of residential construction in the US. The 1/4” and 3/8 inch sizes are typically used to cover existing drywall or in areas that require curved walls, and are not used in areas that require strong panels, such as ceilings. 5/8” drywall is normally used in applications where increased fire resistance is desired, or where increased panel strength is a necessity like in high traffic institutional buildings.

The standard sheet size for drywall is 4’ x 8’. However, the 1/2” and 5/8” thicknesses, though remaining at a width of 4’, are also available in lengths of 9, 10, 12 14, and 16 feet. Of course, custom sizes are also available.

Gypsum Board Installation

Drywall is normally installed by fastening it, using drywall screws, directly to wood or metal studs and joists located in the walls or ceilings of a structure. Occasionally, for wood framed buildings, drywall is installed with special drywall nails instead of screws; however, this is becoming less common.

Once the drywall panels are installed, the joints between the individual panels are filled with joint compound and covered with tape to provide a smooth surface. The points of connection (the screw locations) are also filled in with joint compound and smoothed off to provide a flat sheet. Once the joint compound has dried, it is sanded down to ensure that the surface of the walls is flat and ready for painting.
