In construction and interior fit-out projects, fiber cement boards and calcium silicate boards have become mainstream materials for partition walls, suspended ceilings, and exterior cladding due to their fire resistance, moisture resistance, and high strength. However, a sensitive question persists within the industry: "Does your board actually contain asbestos?"
Although national standards have long promoted asbestos-free products, cost disparities have led to a market situation where asbestos-containing and asbestos-free products are sometimes conflated or sold interchangeably. For project owners, general contractors, and designers, the inadvertent use of asbestos-containing boards not only risks failure to meet environmental compliance standards but also poses health hazards to those occupying the space long-term. Why is it crucial to distinguish between "asbestos-containing" and "asbestos-free" products?

Before delving into testing methods, we must clarify the fundamental differences between the two.
1. Differences in Core Composition
Asbestos-containing boards: The primary reinforcing fiber is chrysotile (white asbestos). Asbestos fibers are extremely fine, possess high natural tensile strength, and are inexpensive.
Asbestos-free boards: In accordance with industry standard JC/T 412.1 (*Fiber Cement Flat Sheets – Part 1: Asbestos-free Fiber Cement Flat Sheets*), the reinforcing materials must consist of alternatives such as wood pulp fibers (cellulose fibers), PVA fibers (polyvinyl alcohol fibers), or PP fibers (polypropylene fibers).
2. Health and Regulatory Risks
Asbestos has been classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by the World Health Organization (WHO). Microscopic asbestos fibers easily become airborne; once inhaled, they settle permanently in the lungs, potentially inducing asbestosis or pleural mesothelioma.
Project Compliance: Green building certifications (such as LEED and WELL) and most government public works projects strictly prohibit the use of asbestos-containing building materials.
Service Life: While asbestos boards offer high strength, they tend to become brittle after prolonged exposure to the natural environment; in contrast, high-quality asbestos-free boards (particularly premium boards reinforced with PVA fibers) demonstrate superior toughness and durability.
