Prefinished fiber gypsum board arrives with its decorative face already applied, so the installation method directly shapes the final look, long-term durability, and ease of future maintenance. The three basic approaches are dry‑hang, adhesive, and face‑fastening - each matched to specific wall conditions and design intent.

Dry‑hang system

A metal furring grid is fixed to the wall, and proprietary clips on the back of each board hook onto the grid. The biggest advantage is a completely clean face with zero visible fasteners. The cavity between the board and the substrate lets the framing correct out‑of‑plumb walls without prior plastering, provides room to run wiring or pack in acoustic insulation, and allows a single panel to be removed for access or replacement without disturbing adjacent boards. The trade‑off is lost interior depth - typically 2 to 3 inches (5–7 cm) - which can make a small room feel tight. Material and labor costs run higher, and layout accuracy has to be exact; even a slight misalignment throws off the joint lines.

Adhesive installation

A specialty adhesive bonds the panel straight to a prepared substrate. This route saves space: the finished surface stands proud of the wall by only the board thickness. On a sound, flat, dry substrate the work goes quickly, eliminates framing costs, and keeps the overall budget in check. The catch is that the substrate has to be near‑perfect - any crumbling, hollow spots, or moisture and efflorescence must be fully remedied first, or the board can debond later. Once adhered, the panel becomes monolithic with the wall; there is virtually no way to remove it without destroying it. Excess glue that isn't cleaned off immediately can stain the prefinished face.

Face‑fastening
Screws or pneumatic nails go straight through the board face into wood studs, steel studs, or OSB backer. This is the fastest, lowest‑cost method and requires no special clips. The positive mechanical bite delivers strong pull‑out and vibration resistance, making it a safe choice for tall walls or ceilings. The obvious trade‑off is visible fastener heads. Color‑matched screw caps, snap‑on covers, or touch‑up filler can tone them down, but up close you'll still see them. If the corrosion‑resistant coating on a screw gets nicked by the driver bit and moisture is present, rust can bleed through. A depth‑sensitive driver and a self‑centering bit help reduce chipping of the prefinished surface.

How to choose
If the existing wall is badly out of plumb and can't be corrected, and you want a completely seamless surface, dry‑hang is the safest bet. When you have a flat, solid concrete or masonry wall and need to keep the build‑out minimal, adhesive gives you a fast, thin finish. If the schedule is tight, the budget is lean, or the design deliberately celebrates the rhythm of exposed fasteners, lean into face‑fastening and put some thought into the cap color and layout.
