Company Releases Practical Installation Guidelines for Gypsum Board Wall Systems
To help crews deliver cleaner, longer-lasting walls, our company has put together a clear set of installation rules for paper-faced gypsum boards on light-gauge steel framing. Based on industry standard GJT 002 and real job site experience, this guide covers everything from board layout to screw patterns, joint treatment, and hidden utility work.
Start on one side of the wall and work your way from the end. Only after all cables, outlets, and switches are installed and inspected should you close up the opposite side. Boards run vertically, with long seams landing on the steel studs and overlapping them by at least 20mm. The bottom cut edge should be lifted about 10mm off the floor using a board lifter-never rest it directly on the slab. The top edge goes tight against the ceiling. For acoustic-rated walls, leave a 10mm gap at the top and fill it with sealant. Fire-rated or sliding head walls follow details in the standard drawings.
Stagger all seams-vertical and horizontal-whether you're using single or double layers on one or both sides. Use self-tapping, rust-proof screws driven in one smooth stroke with a screw gun. Space screws about 200mm apart along board edges and 300mm in the field. Keep screws 10–15mm from bound edges and 15–20mm from cut edges. Start fastening from the middle of the board and work outward. The screw head should sink just 0.5–1.0mm below the surface without tearing the paper. These small habits make an easy install drywall sheet process that feels smooth and predictable.
For joints, always use the manufacturer's own joint compound and tape. Leave a 3mm gap where boards meet surrounding walls or columns to allow room for crack prevention treatment. Never substitute all-purpose joint compound for the proper setting-type filler. On outside corners, add protection: metal corner beads for high-traffic areas, and paper-faced metal corner tape for lighter duty spots.
