The role of fiberglass in gypsum board

Sep 03, 2025 Leave a message

Glass fiber plays a primary role in gypsum board production, improving board performance in the following ways:

Enhanced Mechanical Properties
Glass fiber has an elastic modulus four times higher than gypsum, significantly increasing the tensile strength and toughness of gypsum board, preventing cracking. Appropriate fiber distribution (such as longitudinally oriented across the board surface) maximizes the reinforcing effect, resulting in a board with a breaking load strength exceeding 10 times that of ordinary gypsum board.

1
Improved Durability
Fiber reinforcement improves gypsum board's impact resistance, freeze-thaw resistance, and water resistance, extending its service life. For example, GRG board (glass fiber reinforced gypsum board) is an A1-rated fireproof material and releases moisture in the event of a fire, slowing the spread of fire.

Improved Modeling Capability
The addition of glass fiber makes gypsum board highly malleable, enabling the creation of complex curved surfaces (such as a 6-meter-diameter curved ceiling) while maintaining its lightweight nature (its density is only one-third that of traditional gypsum). Adjusting the fiber content allows for a balance between modeling precision and surface finish. ‌

Adjusting Acoustic Performance
The porous fiber structure enhances sound absorption. GRG panels can achieve a sound absorption rate of over 50%, making them widely used in venues such as theaters and concert halls. Their acoustic properties can be customized through parameters such as thickness and perforation ratio.
