The role of starch in gypsum board production

Starch's Core Role in Gypsum Board Production

1 Enhancing Adhesion: Starch migrates to the interface between the gypsum core and the backing paper through water vapor, forming a stable colloidal structure that ensures a durable bond between the two. Without starch, the core and backing paper will completely separate. ‌‌

‌‌

2 Pregelatinized starch optimizes adhesive properties, ensuring structural stability during high-temperature drying. ‌‌

3 Improving Physical Properties: Adding modified starch improves the compressive strength and toughness of gypsum board, reducing the risk of breakage. The usage level for thicker boards is slightly higher than for thinner boards. ‌‌

‌‌

4 Pregelatinized starch produced by twin-screw extrusion significantly enhances water resistance and is suitable for humid environments such as kitchens and bathrooms. ‌‌

5‌ Improved Construction Performance‌:
Starch regulates the fluidity of the slurry, optimizing construction and workability, resulting in a smoother surface for subsequent decorative processing. ‌‌

‌‌

6 When used in combination with hydroxypropyl cellulose ether, it can reduce the latter's usage and improve crack resistance. ‌‌

7‌ Auxiliary Functions and Technical Details‌
Water retention and mildew resistance: Pregelatinized starch extends the shelf life of dry-mix mortar, but excessive use may cause mildew in humid environments. ‌‌

8 Addition Method: Available in solid or solution form. Solution addition offers greater stability and requires a 0.1% accuracy loss-in-weight scale. ‌‌

‌‌

9 Dosage Control: The typical dosage per square meter is optimized from 30 to 18 grams. The actual dosage should be adjusted dynamically based on the thickness of the board
